Teaching Internships at St John’s Marlborough: Summer 2021

Excalibur Teaching School has been awarded a second year of DfE funding to offer paid teaching internships based at St John’s Marlborough. The 2021 programme will run for four weeks from 14 June – 9 July. The programme is aimed at current undergraduates who are studying Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics based subjects and who are interested in an exciting 4-week internship paying £300 per week.

We hope that the programme will encourage students to consider teaching Maths or Physics as a career once they graduate.

Interns will spend four weeks based at St John’s,  gaining valuable work experiences including:

  • learning about the role of the teacher in a secondary school
  • investigating evidence based approaches to teaching and learning
  • pedagogy and approaches to learning
  • how to create a positive environment for learning
  • developing presentation and communication skills
  • working with young people and networking with professionals

This DfE funded programme has been set up to encourage more people to apply for Treacher Training courses in Maths and Physics. We’ll talk to interns about the opportunities to train as a teacher, and we are keen to recruit STEM degree students who have not yet considered a teaching career.

The internship will provide valuable work experience and skills which are transferable into other careers, enabling students to gain confidence and giving them the edge in the job market. More importantly, the four-week programme offers an unforgettable life experience.

Who can apply?

Priority will be given to students on an undergraduate course that enables them to take a secondary Maths or Physics post-graduate teaching qualification.

Applications from undergraduates in other subjects that might require some Subject Knowledge Enhancement before being accepted onto a Maths or Physics course will also be considered.

Applications will be considered from undergraduates from any year.

We are unable to accept applications from anyone who has already secured a place on a PGCE training course for 2021/22

Emma Hawes, Excalibur Teaching School Director, is heading up the programme. She said:

“We already run a successful School Direct teacher training programme at St John’s, and the internship programme complements this well. Our exciting four-week programme will give undergraduates a taste of life as a secondary school teacher, as well as an opportunity to gain valuable research experience, and we hope that our interns will be inspired to consider teaching as a career option once they graduate.

We have a limited number of places available and are accepting applications now. Closing date Tuesday 4th May 2021.
